 Designer Jil Sander began her career as a fashion editor for the German magazine Petra. She went from talking about fashion to creating it in the late 1960s. In 1975, Sander hit Paris with her initial offering and failed. The designs were a little too mild and plain for that era. It wasn’t until the fashion world realized that Sander’s method of creating coordinating pieces to combine into different outfits was genius that her designs become a hit.
 
 Sander is the originator of what design mavericks call the onion look. The key is in the layers. Each separate piece overlaps with the next. Shirts don’t tuck, they lay over the top of A-line skirts. This look gained popularity in the 1980s with movies like Annie Hall. Soft minimalistic colors that blend together to create a soft look that is casual and feminine. 
 
 The modern-day Jil Sander line carries more than just women’s apparel. It features business and evening wear for both women and men. You find handmade shoes and accessories under this label, as well. The Jil Sanders group even offers eyewear. Sander has not maintained an active role in her brand for years, but this season marks her return to the company.
