Yves Saint Laurent

When a woman is wearing one of the exquisite gowns of Yves Saint Laurent, everyone knows it. The classic silhouettes of the 1940s are what this designer used to further his vision of elegance and classic beauty. While the designer may have been renowned for creating elegant designs, his own life did not feature such seamless success.

The rise of the Yves Saint Laurent label was a product of the designer's early beginnings in studying with French designer Christian Dior. Born in 1936, Yves Saint Laurent grew up with a passion for creating dresses for his own mother and sisters. In 1953, Yves Saint Lauren began an apprenticeship with Christian Dior after winning the International Wool Secretariat contest. The designer became inspired by the way in which Dior embrace the feminine form in his designer and worked for him until 1957. In 1957, Yves Saint Laurent became the head of the Dior couture fashion house after Dior suffered a massive heart attack. Later, Yves Saint Laurent was fired from the designer after serving in the French army, and this spurred him to start his own fashion label.

The Style

Since creating the Yves Saint Laurent fashion brand, the brand has become renowned for its designs that are reminiscent of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. The designer was famed with creating the first tuxedo for women, called Le Smoking. Yves Saint Laurent was one of the first couture houses of France to create a ready-to-wear line for ordinary women.

Overall, Yves Saint Laurent has become renowned for making elegant dress and pantsuit designs that professional women can incorporate into their daily looks. While the life of this French designer may have been a bit tumultuous at times, his designs have withstood the test of time for their luxurious appeal. He has become renowned for democratizing fashion for women around the world.
