Miu Miu

They are offbeat, bold, and sexy. They open eyes and turn heads. They are the fashions of Miuccia Prada - known as Miu Miu, and if they are stared at by some, that's just how she wants it. A sprinkling of metallic lame, impossible color schemes, and a touch of nerdy-chic all combine to produce one of the most recognizable and coveted labels in the luxury fashion world.

The Miu Miu label was launched in 1992 when Prada began her line that catered to young well-to-do women. She had joined her father's leathergoods shop - Fratelli Prada in Milan, Italy - more than 20 years earlier and took over the business in 1978. But she was not an instant success with her first offering of totes and backpacks. However, in 1989, she and her husband, Patrizio Bertelli, made the fashion world take notice with a dazzling display of fabrics and bright colors. Sales skyrocketed with the introduction of the Miu Miu label. In 1993, Prada won the Council of Fashion Designers of America award for her accessories.

Today, Miu Miu designs fill many boutiques around the worl. The unusual pairing of colors sets the label apart from other luxury designers. So does the blendng of fabrics, such as joining the softness of silk with a harsher cloth to produce a striking pants suit or dress. The trademark of the Miu Miu design is a sense of elegance coupled with everyday working needs. This fashion statement is often completd with teetering platform shoes or scrolling decorations on an otherwise plain nylon or metal handbag. With the Miu Miu label, the overall feeling is sensual sophistication. It is also eye-turning, eye-catching, even shocking, according to some sentiments. Miuccia Prada would undoubtedly agree.
